About Toto
The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name throughout the globe.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an alternative producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
Music
Toto is a rock group from the United States that enjoyed their greatest success in the 1980s. The band was created by experienced session musicians and has sold more than 40 million albums around the world.
The first toto album was the self-titled Toto album, which came out in 1978. It was a huge hit that brought the band to international fame. Since then, the band has released fourteen albums that have all been huge hits.
In 1984, Toto wrote their first and, to this day only, film score for the film Dune. This was a huge undertaking, and the entire group was required to participate. The album that came out, Kingdom of Desire, was another record that was a huge success. After a world tour drummer Bobby Kimball left the band and was replaced by drummer Fergie Frederiksen of Le Roux. The band continued to push forward with their fifth album, Isolation. The album contained a variety of hits, such as "Stranger in Town".
After Isolation Toto was released, the band went on break. This gave every member of the band the chance to explore their own solo projects. In 1996, the group was reformed to tour and make an album. It was the first time in more than a decade that all of the original band members were on stage.
The following year, Toto toured together with Ringo Starr and his All Starr Band. This was the last time all of Toto's original members were performing at the same time. Following this, the group was again disbanded. Toto came back together for a benefit concert in 2010 to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. It was the first time all of the original Toto members appeared performing together for over 31 years. The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

Drummer Shem von Schroeck took over however the group was not the same without Paich and Phillinganes. In 2008, Toto decided to take the time off from touring due to changes to the lineup and a disappointing series of releases. The group returned to touring in 2012 after the release of their album 40 Trips Around The Sun.
The album was a return to the band's best form and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out concerts in North America and Europe. The reunion of Toto gathered momentum after the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
