The band Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also highly acclaimed studio musicians with Boz Scaggs at the time) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from a Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.
In 1981 Toto's third album Turn Back is a failure, but they rebound with their fourth album Isolation which contains two hits including the title track and Roseanna. The album and tour made them a household name throughout the globe.
After a hiatus of a few years, Toto return with the album Fahrenheit in the year 1986. It marks a step away from the ballads of previous albums and features some heavy rock. The album was their first album to go platinum in North America.
When they record the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and is financially in trouble. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an alternative producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of the legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman and gives the band much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999 and goes on a massive worldwide tour. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a short hiatus, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer’s song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's coverage of Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

The original group was joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.
